Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, Salve Regina University

This chapel is one of the last pieces of the puzzle for the Salve campus. It has been a long time in planning for a freestanding chapel that will serve as the spiritual center of this catholic university. It is undoubtedly going to be just that special. Early in the planning, Salve made arrangements to salvage historic Lafarge stained glass windows from a church scheduled for demolition in southeastern MA. The Lafarge windows are of significant historical quality. They have undergone extensive restoration for their final placement in the chapel. The location of these windows was planned for early on, allowing the building design to accent them proudly.

The building's simple elegance is of classic design and is sure to fit well within the most historically significant neighborhood in Newport, RI. The building was designed by Robert A. Stern, with construction and engineering drawings prepared by local architects. The classic design includes a bell tower clad in stone, red cedar roof shingles, and sidewalls of shingle and stone.

The chapel's interior includes bluestone floors, oak wainscoting, and exposed wood trusses. Below the chapels, the first floor is a full story below grade which will house the campus ministry program. The building contains approximately 11,600 sq. ft.

The university is pleased and fortunate to have its spiritual center located within a building that exudes warmth and classic architectural charm. Farrar & Associates is honored to have been selected to construct such a unique building.
